Fragrant flowers emerge in spring followed by clusters of larger, sweet, nearly black berries on a more vigorous growing plant. The fruit ripen about two weeks earlier than Adams. Stems grow to eight feet and are well branched. Requires one wild elderberry to pollinate 12 Johns. Johns compliments Adams Elderberry in pollination. Ornamental. The berries are ideal for pies, jam, juices, and wine. Elderberries are often used in cold remedies.
